From the Chair – Festive Season Update

Wow, how quickly has this season snuck up on us! Already, we find ourselves at the Christmas break. I’m incredibly excited about what I’ve seen so far this season—so many positive developments for softball in Geraldton are happening or on the horizon. Together, as a community, we are growing our game and making our sport more enjoyable for everyone.

One of the most exciting aspects of this season has been the inclusion of Teeball in the GSA, alongside Junior Softball. Seeing the oval come alive with so many kids playing and the incredible atmosphere it created was a joy to behold! While this transition was a larger task than initially anticipated, the efforts of clubs, Teeball representatives, and the GSA team have made it a resounding success. The Teeball season concluded recently with our Grand Finals and Windup, which were a hit with kids and adults alike.

This integration has also led to a significant increase in our membership numbers—up by 40% compared to last season! Even excluding Teeballers, we’ve seen a 6% rise, which is an incredibly positive outcome and speaks volumes about the dedication of our clubs and members. A huge thank you to everyone who contributes to the GSA’s success.

Another highlight has been the return of GSA representative sides. Earlier in the season, we proudly sent a team to the Men’s Under 23s State Championships, and plans are underway to send three Teeball sides to the State Championships in March next year. Seeing the GSA brand on the state stage again is incredibly gratifying. A special congratulations to the Under 23s team and coaches for making it all the way to the Grand Final—what an achievement!

On a personal note, I recently participated in the Pan Pacific Masters on the Gold Coast and was thrilled to see so many familiar faces from the Geraldton Softball community performing exceptionally well acorss all divisions. For those worried about getting older—don’t! Masters competitions are something to look forward to. If you can get your hand on the footage, check out the Over 35s Mens Gold Medal match between the Ferals and Brisbane Giants— Fair to say Ive seen a few innings of Softball in my time, This was probably the the most epic game of softball Ive witnessed.

Behind the Scenes Updates
Here are some key initiatives the GSA Board has been working on so far in Season 24/25:

  • By-Laws Update: With the addition of Teeball, our By-Laws underwent a thorough review and update.
  • June Carnival Planning: Work has already begun, and we’re excited about some enhancements to make the event even better.
  • Bench Makeover: Thanks to the generosity of Meedac, our benches have received a much-needed refresh. A big thank you to JV for making this happen!
  • New Sponsorship: Wintersun has joined as a major sponsor, and Diamond 1 has been renamed “Wintersun Diamond” for the next two seasons.
  • Member Windups: Planning for an even bigger and better windup is underway for the new year.
  • Grant Success: We’ve secured a $5,000 grant from Iluka for shading in the main spectator area. Discussions are ongoing about how best to proceed.
  • History Documentation: We’re working on documenting our association’s history, including past Grand Final winners and MVPs. If you have any information, please reach out!
  • Fresh Look Coming: Keep an eye out in the new year for an exciting update for the GSA!!!

Call for Assistance
As we look ahead, we’re calling on members to help with two projects:

  1. Toilet Ceiling Repairs: Winter storms have damaged the ceiling, and we need qualified individuals or volunteers to assist with its replacement.
  2. Shade Structure Construction: If you can help with erecting a permanent shade structure using materials provided by the GSA, please get in touch.

If you’re able to assist with either project, please email admin@geraldtonsoftball.com.au.

A Festive Reminder
As we celebrate the festive season, I’d like to remind everyone of the goals we’re striving for at the GSA—a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for all. It starts with each of us. Set the standard for respect and positivity, and together, we can make the GSA the best it can be.

I can’t wait for what’s to come in the second half of the season and look forward to seeing you all in 2025! Wishing you a fantastic festive season.

Merry Christmas,
Paul Valenti
